If the idea of lying on a beach with a book all holiday fills you with dread, there’s plenty to get the adrenalin flowing in and around Dubai

Out in the desert you can try your hand at sand-skiing (watch out for grazed knees, and keep your mouth closed if you fall over!), or quad biking on “Big Red”. 4WD treks into the dunes and “wadi-bashing” (exploring dried up river valleys) are also great ways to see how Dubai looked before the skyscrapers took root.

For more four-wheeled action, head to the Dubai Autodrome - as well as hosting international A1 Grand Prix and sportscar racing events, it also offers go-karting for children and adults

Watersport facilities are available at all of the beach resorts. Buy a day pass, and then enjoy paragliding, waterskiing, jetskiing, or even the inevitable banana boat!

Sailors and fishermen will find like-minded friends at Dubai Offshore Sailing Club (DOSC), Dubai International Marine Club at Mina Seyahi, or Jebel Ali. Cruisers and yachts (with or without crew) can be hired by the hour or day to venture further afield.

You certainly wouldn’t choose Dubai for a ski holiday, but the indoor ski slope, Ski Dubai (with “real” snow) at the Mall of the Emirates is certainly a novel way to spend a spare afternoon, and a good talking point when you get back home. No need to pack the skis, though – you can hire everything on site

Or of course, you could always try riding a camel…
