Golf
Golf is big in Dubai. In fifteen years it has grown from an improvised hack around the desert with a bit of portable Astroturf, to boasting half a dozen full-length courses (see map), some used for PGA European Tour events.

Some are "greener" than others - areas between fairways are grassed in some cases, but are more commonly cultivated with bushes or trees and occasionally open stretches of sand, so beware of going too far off the intended line!

They are all typically well planned and offer a good challenge at all levels of ability.

All courses are spikeless, which means that soft spikes are OK. Most will require evidence of a handicap - maximum 28 for men and 45 for women is generally expected.

The service at all the courses is excellent - you are typically greeted from your car and your clubs ferried on a buggy to a bag drop area while you wander in and get ready. The course assistants will clean your clubs after the round while you relax in the bar, and ferry them back to your car when it is time to leave. Bliss!

A good alternative to the full-length courses is the nine-hole Jebel Ali course. No restriction on handicap here, as long as you are an "experienced" player with sufficient ability and knowledge of etiquette. It is a great way to get used to playing in warmer weather, as the nine-hole round is a good way to ease yourself into the way of golfing in Dubai.

Playing golf in warm weather does take some getting used to - buggies help a lot, and they are available at all the main clubs, mostly with satellite navigation to help you find your way from tee to green. The usual sun protection precautions are obvious, but remember to have plenty to drink. Many courses have roving assistants bringing drinks and chilled flannels to you every few holes - the flannels are just wonderful!
